Leighton Baines |
Sir Alex Ferguson made Baines one of his main summer targets and hopes to complete the deal before the end of this week.
Fergie views Baines as United’s long-term successor to Patrice Evra at left-back and is hoping to sign him in time to take him on the club’s summer tour of South Africa and China next week.
It’s understood United will pay an initial £12m for Baines, which could rise by another £4m depending on add-ons.
Every transfer window David Moyes appears braced to sell one or more of his prized assets in order to balance the books but in recent seasons the big sales have not been so frequent and the Toffees boss has even on occasion been handed a small sum to invest in his Everton squad, as with his £5.5m signing of Rangers forward Nikica Jelavic in January.
Now it seems that Moyes will lose Leighton Baines to Man United, if this does indeed prove to be the case then it would end at least two years of speculation over just such a move. Some are of the belief that Sir Alex Ferguson is not all that impressed with the showing of Patrice Evra over the past year and as such a move for Baines would keep the French veteran on his toes.
Man United have already brought in Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell during this transfer window and are being linked with numerous other potential new signings as Ferguson looks to wrestle the Premier League title back from local rivals City.
Baines has been a consistent performer for most of his five seasons at Goodison Park and is a player that Moyes will struggle to replace. A move to Man United may well be just what helps the England international push to displace Ashley Cole from his left-back slot in the national team set-up.
