Two down, two to go: Ferguson unveils Kagawa and Powell and sets sights on Baines and Moura
United boss would also love to bring in Robin van Persie from Arsenal as he plots to wrestle the title back from Man City
Sir Alex Ferguson has vowed to make two more signings to wrest the Premier League title back from Manchester City.
Ferguson has already added midfield duo Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell to his squad and is looking to strengthen further this summer.
Everton defender Leighton Baines and Brazil wonderkid Lucas Moura are top of Ferguson’s transfer targets, but he would also love to sign Arsenal’s Robin van Persie.
And although United face a heavy debt burden, Ferguson said there is money to spend on more signings.
Sir Alex Ferguson will not have taken last season’s failures well and the Scot may well be looking to conduct a major squad re-shuffle and to that end has already brought in Kagawa and Powell and released, sold or loaned out a number of players he clearly feels are not of value to his squad.
Michael Owen and Tomasz Kuszczak were not offered new contracts, Paul Pogba left for Juventus and fellow youngster Ezekiel Fryers is apparently Tottenham bound. Park Ji-Sung was sold to QPR and the Loftus Road side have also taken Fabio on loan for next term.
Ferguson has set his sights on a number high profile additions to his Old Trafford squad as he looks to wrestle the Premier League title back from their ‘noisy neighbours’ Man City.
By all accounts discussions to sign young Brazilian playmaker Lucas Moura are fairly advanced, with a delegation travelling to South America to thrash out a deal that will cost the club at least £30m. The talented teenager is a much sought after property with Chelsea and Real Madrid also said to be interested.
The Sao Paulo man is a creative central midfielder who plays in an advanced role and is already a fixture in the national team set-up with the 19 year old having already collected 15 caps.
Leighton Baines has been linked with a move to Man United for quite some time but it does appear that negotiations may well have started between the two clubs and the noises coming out of Goodison Park appear ominous and given the financial problems the Toffees are beset by a sale of a player or two this summer could be on the cards for David Moyes.
The 27 year old left back may well be brought in to keep Patrice Evra on his toes after the Frenchman exhibited some fairly average form last term.
Possibly the toughest nut of these three to crack would be the purchase of Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie. Though the Dutchman has publicly stated his intention to not sign a new deal the North London club have stated in response that they expect the forward to honour his current contract which could mean he sticks with the Gunners for another season.
Man City, Juventus and Barcelona have been mooted as possible destinations for the 28 year old but perhaps a move to Old Trafford would appeal to the Arsenal goal machine.
